Welcome to LearnHiligaynon.com!

I created this site as a Hiligaynon learner in August 2020 to help out other learners of this wonderful language. In short, it’s the site I wish I had when I was starting out.

Hiligaynon Conversational Connectors a.k.a. how to sound more fluent than you are

09.23.2020 by sarah //

Despite now having a decent vocabulary and some actual grammar knowledge, I still sometimes have that issue of giving 1-2 word answers to questions. This week, I decided to address this issue by compiling a list of conversation connectors.

I got this idea from Benny Lewis, who got it from Antony Lauder – you can basically “fake” fluency by inserting filler phrases such as, “to tell you the truth…”, “my opinion is that…” “when all is said and done…” and so on.

This isn’t a new idea, so there are plenty of lists floating around the internet, but (surprise, surprise!) there are none for Hiligaynon. So, me being me, I’ve made my own.

I’ve picked these up over the last few months from various conversations I’ve had or videos I’ve watched, and they’ve all been verified by a native speaker (my Mum).

Enjoy!

Introducing… Hiligaynon flashcards!

09.07.2020 by sarah //

I’ve spent months on this, and I’m so happy to be finally putting it out into the world – this is my personal Hiligaynon flashcard deck. You’ll need Anki to use it, which is a free (except for iOS) and powerful flashcard app. I’ve compiled over 2,000 Hiligaynon phrases and words with example sentences, and you can access it here.

Some examples (front and back):

name

Sín-o ang ______ mo?
What is your name?

ngálan

Sín-o ang ngálan mo?

to get a sore throat

Nag_____ ang tutúnlan ko.
My throat became sore.

áskad

Nagáskad ang tutúnlan ko.

“Can I ask a question?”

P____ k_ k__________?

Pwéde ko kapamángkot?

“Give the flowers to Vida.”

I_____ a__ b____ k__ V___.

Ihátag ang búlak kay Vida.

Peste nga Kobed by Val Ortiz – a fun COVID PSA song

Between this and all the other viral videos (pun intended) coming out of SE Asia right now, I think they’re winning at the PSA game. This is fun and easy to follow even for beginners.
